MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) — New York officials are seeking to expand offshore wind generation in the Atlantic Ocean.

The state has proposed four new sites for wind energy projects to the federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management. Officials say they are asking federal regulators to expedite the process.

Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo has set a goal of producing 50 percent of all electricity in the state from renewable energy by 2030. He envisions producing 2,400 megawatts of offshore wind, enough to power up to 1.2 million households in the state.

A modest project approved earlier this year east of Montauk Point will generate 90 megawatts from 15 turbines when it opens in 2022.

The four proposed sites announced Monday are in areas south of Long Island and closer to New Jersey.
